This Much I Know Is True

In a recent writing workshop, I was prompted to write a poem in the form of a list titled "This Much I Know Is True." I immediately began to think about the lessons and truths I've learned as a couples therapist. While I love working with individuals, I find that my work with couples connects me most deeply to my calling and to the truths about relationships, individuality, and our need to belong. This list is indeed informed by the trainings and teachers I've sought out as a psychotherapist, but its mostly informed by the couples I've worked with and the ways in which they have generously invited me into their stories and their healing. Here's what I wrote:

–Shame is the thief of curiosity and connection.

–We’re all guilty and we’re all good.

–I can't begin to know you until I know me.

–Healing happens in all directions, back through your ancestors, forward through your children, east and west through everyone you know, up into the unknown and down into the earth that made you.

–Pleasure is your birthright.

–It is all worthwhile, all worthy of the light touch of your curiosity, but not the weight of your judgement nor the fine prize of your attention.

–Love is never wasted.

–We're wired for connection, and most connected with we're sovereign.

–You can be right or you can be free.

–You have nothing but your best guess, an eternally rough draft.

What would you add to this list?
